Fire-rated downlights are designed to preserve the fire resistance of ceilings by preventing fire spread through the cut-out spaces. Typically rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes, the most advanced downlights come with a 2 hour fire-protection rating. These types of recessed downlights prevent both heat and flames from transmitting through the ceiling because of their expandable materials that seal off any air holes when a high temperature is reached.
